This runs on the CHIP-8? That's amazing! It plays magnificently! Was this built for the CHIP-8, SCHIP, or XO-CHIP?
You're a chicken. You want to eat bugs. How fast can you get 'em?
- Use ASWD or the arrow keys to run. Press and hold to dash, which is only slightly faster than running.
- Press E or the spacebar to peck at bugs. (or dirt. or small rocks. you can peck at anything, really.)
- Press Q to use echolocation (an ability chickens have) to find distant bugs.
You can also play on mobile devices! Tap the screen to bring up a gamepad.
Chicken Scratch was created as part of Octojam 7, an annual game jam about writing software for a virtual game console from the late 1970s. Learn more about the tools used to write this, and find out how to make your own games, on the Octo itch page.

This uses XO-CHIP instructions, mostly because I need the "scroll-up" instruction that is conspicuously absent from SCHIP. The sound effects and use of a third color are side benefits. :)
The source is available as a download, if you're curious.
Hi! I'll be playing Chicken Scratch tomorrow on stream along with several other games from the jam at 3:30pm EST. I'll be talking about any interesting design decisions as I play, and suggesting improvements if any come to mind. Please feel free to join me live, it'll be extra fun to chat together about your game while playing it :)
