Decker 1.67

Decker 1.67 is a maintenance release focused on bugfixes and minor usability improvements.

Fixes (Native):

  • Fixed Decker and Lilt crashing when attempting to read certain kinds of inaccessible binary files.
  • Fixed crashes and inconsistent behavior when working with font glyphs larger than 127 pixels in either dimension; glyphs can now be up to 255x255 pixels, with a maximum inter-glyph spacing of 255 pixels, as intended.
  • Fixed possible crashes on MacOS when opening or saving files in paths containing non-ASCII characters.

Fixes (Web and Native):

  • Corrected minor omissions and typos in documentation.
  • Resized the columns in the Sounds modal to avoid truncating the display of file sizes.

New Features:

  • The script editor now has keyboard shortcuts for "File -> Go To Deck..." (^d) and "File -> Go To Card..." (^e).
  • Added a few new cards to the Decker Guided Tour, touching on scripting concepts that often seem to be confusing for new users.
  • The Lil "trim" primitive is now much more efficient when it only needs to trim whitespace from the beginning of strings. This is particularly useful for skipping whitespace when sequentially parsing strings.
  • The Array Interface can now read and write floating-point casts: f32l, f32b, f64l, f64b. This fleshes out a prominent omission and aids in working with a wider range of binary file formats.
  • The Font/DA Mover now displays file size information for fonts, sounds, modules, and prototypes. This makes it easier to see how much each resource is contributing to the size of your deck:

  • The font.deck Glyph Editor (v1.6) now offers configurable horizontal rulers, making it easier to design typefaces with consistent ascenders, baselines, descenders, etc. (this one's for you, gurt!)

  • Hershey.deck is a library for working with scalable vector fonts in Decker, along with a collection of fonts and routines for manipulating their shapes:

Breaking Changes:

  •  When a user cancels an open-file dialog summoned by Decker's read[] function, the function will now consistently return nil instead of returning a type-appropriate empty or zero value. This makes it possible for scripts to distinguish this action from opening an empty or inaccessible file. The behavior of read[] in Lilt has not been altered.

Screwtapello recently published a tool for converting a variety of bitmapped font formats for Decker. Check it out, convert some of your favorite fonts, and consider adding the diacritics and other symbols needed to support DeckRoman!

Harlequin Diver just published the full release of The Dreams in the Peacock House, a surreal and beautiful hybrid parser-interactive-fiction and point-and-click adventure game over two years in the making. To my knowledge, this is the first commercial Steam release powered by Decker!
